Batsman is “batter” — and it sounds silly
A totally unnecessary and disturbing change.
The one thing social media has done — it has provided a platform to ideas. Good ideas, bad ideas, controversial ideas, silly ideas.
Every morning, millions of ideas run for an unofficial race. The idea that touches your emotions the most, or tickles your bones the most, or makes you angry or sad or cringe the most — that idea manages to win the day’s race.
Some ideas become movements.
Some ideas wait for the “experts” of both for and against side to arrive on the scene and start a debate. They divide the world into two factions.
One such idea that has divided the cricketing world is — changing the term “batsman” to “batter”. The issue here is — why should a woman player be called a “batsman” and not a “batswoman.” And for simplicity, would it not be better if both women batswomen and men batsmen are called as “batters”?
While the idea of creating a gender-neutral term for batsmen and batswomen has been there for years, it is now that it’s being talked about on a world’s stage. Two significant events have led to this.
- ECB has proposed that the batsmen in their controversial tournament The 100 will be called as “batters”.
